TV Execs Leak Pilots to BitTorrent
Krysta pointed me to this bit, last night. According to TorrentFreak.com, an increasing number of pilots for new shows are popping up on BitTorrent servers across the globe. Apparently, TV execs themselves are releasing them to help hype their new shows. This is a smart move in an entertainment industry that has been plagued by the perception that they are calling their customers criminals. This is an industry that desperately needs to find a way to let new technology work for them and their clientele, all at once.
One new show that I’m excited about is “Pushing Daisies”. Apparently, according to torrentfreak, an anonymous exec admitted to leaking the pilot to his neighbor kid, who shared it on torrent. Pushing Daisies looks to be another show of the Gilmore Girls ilk –a great show that deserves to be watched, but may suffer the all-too-common fate of garnering much critical acclaim, but not the viewership it deserves.
From Testpattern on MSNBC.com:
“Pushing Daisies” has been described as a “forensic fairy tale,” and its plot is as outlandish as its charm is heartwarming. Ned (played by Lee Pace), is a piemaker with an unusual gift — he can bring people back to life merely by touching them (he can also restore decaying fruit, which helps out in his business).
But Ned’s gift has strings and rules. If he touches the resurrected person again after giving them life, they die. If he doesn’t touch them, and they stay alive for more than a minute, another person must die.
Ned didn’t discover the ins and outs of this as a child, and his mother and the father of his childhood sweetheart both are worse off for it. Later in life, he makes up to the childhood sweetie by bringing her back after she’s murdered on a cruise ship, but when they start to fall in love, the problem becomes obvious — they can never touch again.
The plot is fun, but what really sells “Pushing Daisies” is the look. Think “Edward Scissorhands” or other Tim Burton films.
Personally, I think this show will be a great counterpoint to “Supernatural”, and, if it makes it more that a few episodes, will rescue those of us who miss “Dead Like Me”, and “Wonderfalls”.
What do you think?

Thanks Jonathan! I’ve heard “Daisies” is a great show. Of course those Winchester boys have always been awesome.
I wonder how the execs feel about certain cable companies (Comcast) that are purposely blocking torrent downloads. Sorry…that’s for another blog…heh!
