Ghost Hunters vs. The Winchester Brothers – T.A.P.S. Founders Speak in St Louis

Supernatural Dean and Sam compared with Ghost Hunters Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson

Ghost Hunters vs. the Winchester Brothers

Last night, fellow Spekked blogger, Lynn of Reality Exploits, and I went to the Saint Louis Library Central to see Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson of Ghost Hunters fame.

Unfortunately, the organizers were not prepared for the thousands –1200, at least- of fans that came for the presentation. We were shuffled into an overflow room to watch the Power Point Presentation [Zzzzzzz!] and listen to audio from poorly placed public address speakers. Our backs and feet had issues, so, after realizing that we weren’t going to get much out of the event, we headed off.

Outside we spoke to several people who were not happy about the lack of planning. This should have been at a much larger venue. I think people would have paid $5-$10, if they knew they could see the T.A.P.S. stars of paranormal research.

Check out Lynn’s coverage of the Ghost Hunters in St Louis for more information.

So, for all our new friends, especially those that love both Ghost Hunters, and Supernatural, I bring you my own, personal, “Compare and Contrast” treatment of the duos that star in each show.

The T.A.P.S. Ghost Hunters: Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson
The Supernatural Demon Hunting Brothers: Sam Winchester and Dean Winchester

Jason and Grant Sam and Dean

Business Partners and Best Friends Brothers
Roughly fifty percent of the time, find what they think are probably spirits, to whom they express their respect and their desire to communicate with them, and help them, as need be. Always find paranormal phenomena; get butts kicked by spirits; destroy spirits

Became Ghost Hunters after having their own “paranormal experiences”. Became Ghost/Demon Hunters after having their own paranormal experience, and because their father was obsessed with finding and destroying the Yellow-Eyed Demon that killed their mother, by suspending her, in flames, pressed against the ceiling over the bed.

Jason Hawes

  • Gruff
  • Domineering
  • Led hunting team alone before recruiting best friend as partner.
  • Signed multi-year contract with Sci-Fi Channel. Sci-Fi pays TAPS fees and royalties, in exchange for the exclusive rights to broadcast Ghost Hunters, which they will deliver to Sci-Fi for the term of the contract.

Dean Winchester

  • Gruffer
  • Domineering
  • Hunted alone before recruiting brother as partner.
  • “Signed” perpetual contract with demon. Demon brought Sam back from the dead, in exchange for Dean’s soul/life, which he will “deliver” at the end of one year from the contract date.

Grant Wilson

  • Gentler
  • Nicer
  • Regarded as the heart of the team
  • Agreed to become hunting partner, when best friend invited him along.

Sam Winchester

  • Gentler
  • Nicer
  • Regarded as the heart of the team
  • Refused to become hunting partner, when brother invited him along. He was headed to law school after graduating college. Changed his mind, after the Yellow-Eyed Demon killed his girlfriend, by suspending her, in flames, pressed against the ceiling over the bed.
Hunt spirits using the following tools in ways that they were not originally intended:

  • 35mm Film Cameras
  • Digital Video Cameras
  • Night Vision Goggles
  • Infrared Adapters
  • Digital Thermometers
  • Electromagnetic Field Detectors
  • Analog Audio Tape Recorders
Hunt spirits using the following tools in ways that they were not originally intended:

  • Rock Salt
  • Shotguns
  • Matches

Would it be cool/lame to have the Ghost Hunters show up as, well, hunters, on Supernatural? I think it would be an interesting matchup, perhaps? Anyone a fan of both shows?
