Supernatural 3.03 Dean and Sam Winchester “Bad Day at Black Rock”

Episode 3.03 Bad Day At Black Rock
Original Air Date: October 18, 2007

Hunter Kubrick is at the prison, visiting Gordon, the hunter who wanted to kill Sam in Season Two. Gordon tells Kubrick that he must hunt Sam down, because he’s evil and is the one that opened the Gate in the Season Two finale.

In the Impala, the boys are arguing about why Sam didn’t kill Ruby, since she’s a demon. Dean thinks she’s lying to Sam to take advantage of him somehow. Sam believes they can really take a risk and exploit her to get what they need.

Their dad’s phone rings. Sam answers, and learns from the caller that their dad kept a storage unit, just outside Buffalo. Someone has broken into it, and they want to know if they should contact the police. Sam insists that he’ll take care of it.

Kubrick is talking to another hunter, Cready, who’s asking whether they can trust Gordon’s word on Sam. They discuss how difficult it will be to hunt down Sam.

At the storage unit, Sam and Dean find a pentagram that would have kept demons out, a trip wire, and some blood. There are two sets of footprints. They find a bunch of old relics from the boys’ youth –Sam’s Division trophy, Dean’s first sawed-off. They find curse boxes that could contain evil.

Supernatural 3×03 Box containing the Rabbit’s Foot

Two guys –Grossman and the “other” guy- are arguing over opening the box they stole. They mention some woman, who has apparently hired them to steal the box. The one guy is bleeding, from being shot by John Winchester’s booby trap. Inside the box is a rabbit’s foot. There’s banging on the door. Another man is at the door, complaining about how late it is. He sees the man who has been shot, and tells Grossman to go get his medic’s kit from under his sink.

The boys find the car that they apparently spotted on the security camera at the storage unit. The boys head inside. In an obviously uncharacteristic spate of luck, the one man is winning at cards with his friend Grossman. He says he doesn’t want to give the rabbit’s foot up to the as-yet-unnamed woman. Sam and Dean rush in, guns drawn. They ask for the box, and are not pleased that the men had opened it, since it’s probably evil. Sam takes the rabbit’s foot, and the boys get the upper hand over the men, who both, through accidental falls, end up unconscious.

Later, the second man awakens. He calls for Grossman to wake up. The man walks into the kitchen, and ends up slipping on a bottle lying on the floor and falling into the counter. A “fork” that he had just pulled out of the sink stabs him clean through the back of his head and out his mouth. Grossman wakes up to find him.

Sam is talking to Bobby, who’s chiding Sam for having touched the rabbit’s foot. It’s hoodoo, made by a Baton Rouge conjure woman to kill people with. He’ll have incredible luck, but, once he loses it, he’ll die within a week. He tells Sam that everyone always loses it.

Supernatural 3×03 Sam and Dean are the One Millionth Customer!

In Biggerson’s Restaurant, Sam is the millionth patron. Lucky guy!

Kubrick and Cready are talking about going out to eat at a place that Cready knows about. They look up the menu online, and see Sam and Dean’s photo taken for being the millionth customer.

Supernatural 3×03 Dean buys scratch off lottery tickets to exploit the lucky rabbit’s foot!

Sam and Dean are talking. The waitress comes over, and flirts with Sam, glancing back and making eyes at him, as she walks away. Sam spills his coffee, then stands up, knocking a tray out of a server’s hands. This isn’t lucky! So, he realizes the foot is missing from his pocket. The waitress is outside, walking off, unfolding a napkin to reveal the rabbit’s foot. She peels off her black wig. It’s Bela –at least that’s what we’ll find out, later.

Supernatural 3×03 Bela just stole the rabbit’s foot from Sam. “Bad Day at Black Rock”

Grossman is looking at a photo of himself with his dead friend, pouring a libation. Sam and Dean walk in and confront him, asking about the woman. Dean says that his friend is dead, Sam is next, and if he doesn’t help them, he’ll have the blood of all the others to follow on his head.

Bobby tells Dean that he has found a cleansing ritual that should work. Dean tells Bobby that they hear that the girl’s name is Lugosi. Bobby knows it must be Bela, and he knows people who can help find her. Throughout the conversation, Sam’s foot is stuck in a grate. He ends up leaving his shoe in the grate.

Dean thanks Bobby, over the phone, for a tip. Dean leaves Sam in the motel, in hopes that he’ll be safer there from dying accidentally. Dean goes alone to find Bela.

Bela is on the phone, in a fancy apartment, making a deal. She ends the call with plans to meet “in an hour.” She hears a noise, reaches for a gun. She sees a note on the alarm keypad/controller, and turns around to see Dean with gun pointed at her head. She points her gun at his.

In the motel, Sam hears a noise. An air conditioner has caught on fire. He puts it out, but his sleeve catches fire. He puts it out with the curtain, and collapses unconscious. Kubrick and Cready are outside the now uncovered window, smiling.

Dean and Bela, guns pointed at each other, are challenging each other. Dean is confronting her about the curse and right and wrong.

Kubrick and Cready are duct taping Sam to the chair. Sam wakes. Kubrick explains that he is no longer following Gordon’s directions to find and kill Sam, but is now on a mission from God.

Dean is confronting Bela. He tells her about the curse that will mean Sam’s death. She says he can have the rabbit’s foot… for 1.5 MM US Dollars. After a bit of back and forth dialog, Dean starts to walk out, revealing that he has the rabbit’s foot. She is unable, then, to hit him with the many shots she takes.

Kubrick is beating Sam. He pulls a gun on Sam, explaining that their luck finding Sam wasn’t luck, but God leading them to do His work. Suddenly, Dean appears, gun pointed at Kubrick. Kubrick tells him to put the gun down. Dean lays it down but explains that it’s his lucky day. He tosses a ballpoint pen that plugs Kubrick’s gun barrel. Cready takes a punch, but flies headlong into the wall behind him, landing unconscious on the floor. Dean then pitches a remote control, knocking Kubrick out.

Supernatural 3×03 Sam and Dean begin ritual to destroy the cursed Rabbit’s Foot

Sam and Dean are in the middle of destroying the rabbit’s foot. Bela shows up, gun pointed at them. She demands the rabbit’s foot, or she’ll shoot unlucky Sam. Dean agrees, “Ok. Think fast.” She catches the tossed foot, and, now cursed by it, must help them destroy it. She promises to get the upper hand on them, next time, though.

After Bela drives off, Dean realizes that she has stolen their lucky lotto tickets.

Kubrick explains to Gordon –still in prison Gordon- that God led him to Sam. Gordon gives him the “you are crazy” look and corresponding elongated "o-o-o-o-k-a-a-a-ay" response, but appears glad to have an ally.

This was a great episode. Mild camp. Some more telling information. I’m not sure about Bela. I think she could end up being such a great character, and thorn in the boys’ sides, that she’ll be annoying. I think I might be more annoyed if Kubrick is a recurring character. He’s too cartoonish for extended utilization. At least, that’s what my textbook of story writing would say.

What did you think about this episode? Do you think we’ll see Kubrick and Cready again? Do you think Cready will end up saving Sam from his crazy friend, later this season? I sure do. Did you think Cready looked consistently incredulous of Kubrick’s belief that Sam is evil? Who’s cooler, Bela or Ruby? Bela’s human –a love interest?

I loved this ep! I laughed practically through the whole ep. Poor Sam with all the bad luck. “I Lost My Shoe” is now a classic Sam quote in my long list of SPN quotes I will never forget. Oh dear and when Dean said “I’m Batman” I totally lost it. I can’t remember the last time I have laughed so hard or so long as I did during Bad Day at Black Rock! *High Five* to Jensen and Jared for the laughs
