Supernatural 3.04 Sin City Episode Recap
Supernatural 3.04 Sin City
Original Air Date: October 25, 2007
In a Catholic church, a nun placing the book of worship in the pews, is interrupted by a spooky wind. She turns to see the priest. He hands her one more, and says that was the last.
A man, Andy, is in the balcony addressing the father, saying that God can’t or won’t help “us”. Andy pulls out a handgun and shoots himself in the head.
Bobby is working on the Colt, while Dean prepares ammo. Sam is telling them about news stories of possible demon omens occuring in Ohio –sudden weather changes, the suicide in the church, and a man going “postal” in a hobby store, before police subdued him. Bobby tells them that the Colt won’t be ready to kill demons, yet.
Sam and Dean visit the church where Andy killed himself, posing as insurance investigators. The priest says he stopped coming to church two months earlier, at the same time that most of the town had suddenly started “sinning” heavily. The priest says that the man in the hobby shop, Tony Perkins, had changed at the same time as Andy. Two months before is when the Devil’s Gate was opened letting the demons loose.
At their hotel, they run into hunter Richie, who is paying an apparent hooker as she leaves his room across the hall. Dean and Richie explain to Sam that they met while Sam was at school, when they ran up against a succubus. Dean and Richie disagree over who killed the succubus. Dean tells Richie that he’s not cut out for this work, and will end up getting killed. Richie says he hadn’t found any demons in the town yet. While they discuss the possibilities of how and why demons might be possessing the people of the town, Richie explains that a particular nice guy in the town, Trotter, had brought in the gambling, the prostitutes, and other vices.
Sam and Dean meet Richie at Trotter’s Bar. Richie points out Trotter. Dean says he’s going to start his “investigating” with a particular bartender in a miniskirt. Richie claims to have a “date” with her later, though Dean is incredulous. Richie goes to the men’s room, right before Sam and Dean spot the priest drinking at the bar. He says he goes where his “flock” is, then flirts with the bartender. Dean orders the bartenders signature drink, a hurricane. Suddenly, a man walks in and shoots another man. Dean tackles the man, and Sam sprinkles holy water on him –with no effect. The shooter says the victim had slept with his wife. Trotter makes eye contact with Sam, giving an disapproving look.
The police take the shooter away. Sam and Dean express a bit of confusion over why the town is so crazed and debauched, but this first living specimen didn’t wasn’t, apparently, possessed. They realize they don’t see Richie.
Richie and the bartender are getting out of his car at her house. He asks her how a bartender affords such a big house, and she says her parents left it to her. She says she only goes there to be alone. Inside, she appears to set the scene, and tells him she feels safe, since she “has a hunter” to protect her. He looks a bit surprised, her eyes turn the tell-tale demon black. He pulls a knife, but she twists his neck, killing him.
Dean and Sam are in the bar, talking about Richie, and wondering what happened to him. Sam is concerned about the way Trotter looked at him, the night before, and that something may really be going on in Trotter’s Bar.
Bobby is firing the colt at a target, checking its aim. Ruby shows up, reveals herself a demon, and tells Bobby the Colt won’t kill a demon. He shoots her, with no effect. Ruby offers to help with the gun.
Sam is spying on Trotter. His phone rings loudly, alerting Trotter’s minions. [Sammy! All good demon hunters set their phones on vibrate when they're working.] It’s Dean, but Sam excuses himself. A man enters the hallway, looks around, then gives up the search.
At the bar, a woman in a coral dress flirts with Dean. She offers to let him have her for half price. The bartender from the night before teases Dean for striking out with a prostitute. Dean inquires about Richie. She deflects, and they leave together.
Sam is searching Trotter’s office, but is caught by Trotter. Sam gets Trotter’s pistol away from him, then throws holy water on Trotter and his minion. They are unaffected, leaving Sam flummoxed, stammering to excuse himself. He removes the ammo, and lays down the revolver.
Dean and the bartender are in her house. She takes her jacket off, and tells him to make himself comfortable. He tells her that Richie was a friend of his. He says he was able to track him using the GPS in his cell phone. He had come over to her house earlier to give his a proper burial, so he wouldn’t be “rotting in some skank’s basement.” She leaps to kick at him, but is trapped by a pentagram that Dean had drawn on her floor, under the rug. He pulls out a book, and begins to read some Lating to send her to Hell. She summons wind, destroying the book, and causes the walls to collapse over the exit. Dean tells her she’s trapped, but she responds that he is also.
In the demon bartender’s basement, she and Dean launch verbal jabs at each other. She taunts him that he doesn’t have his little exorcism book. He tries, with no success, to recite the words. She taunts him for not paying attention in Latin class, and for being trapped with her. He replies that he has a brother who’ll come to rescue him. She snottily remarks, showing that she knows about Sam, and that everyone says he’s the brains. She says she has a partner as well, and that they’ll have to see who arrives first.
At the bar, Sam asks a male bartender if he’s seen Dean. The bartender asks for compensation, and, receiving it, tells Sam that Dean left with “Casey” about an hour before, headed to her place “for bible study.” Sams asks for the address, and, for more cash, the man gives it up.
Dean tries to find a place where his cell phone will work. She tries to “be civil”, but Dean challenges that her killing Richie wasn’t civil. She brings up the knife that Richie pulled. When Dean says it wouldn’t have hurt her, she replies that it would have damaged Casey’s body, and she likes it too much. She explains that all she did was have lunch with Trotter, using no mojo to get the town to turn bad. She says humans are weak and only require nudging, that’s why demons will win.
Sam enters Casey’s house, and finds sulfur on a console table. He continues to search for Dean.
Dean questions the demon about their taking over, instead of the meek. She challenges the authority of the bible, and questions his belief in a god, explaining that the humans, and their god haven’t done such a great job. War and genocide, and in the past century, the humans had racked up a death toll that surprised even the demons, but the demons are taking over to do it right. Dean hears a noise, hoping it’s Sam, not her partner.
Sam is back at the bar, telling Bobby that he found sulfur, but no Dean. He then tells the bartender that he didn’t find them at the house. He spots the priest, imbibing in a booth, and asks for a second.
Dean and “Casey” are discussing Lucifer, with her explaining that his name means “light bearer”, and proceeds with the story of his falling, because he refused to bow down to the humans. Dean is surprised to find out that he’s real. She says no one has seen him, but she has faith. She doesn’t see that humans and demons are that different; not the clear case of humans are good, demons are bad. She mentions his “one-way ticket”, and that he’s not going to get the best treatment in Hell, because of all the trouble he has made.
Sam is asking the priest about Casey. He asks where she and Dean might have gone. The priest insists they both go to help them, if they’re really in trouble. As the priest puts his coat on, we, but not Sam, see that his eyes are demon black. Oh, man!
“Casey” shows admiration for Dean –he’s likable, and she doesn’t see his soul-selling deal for Sam wasn’t stupid like others have said.
The priest, driving, is asking Sam about “insurance work”, inquiring if he has ever thought of doing any other work. He says Sam seems like he could accomplish great things.
Dean asks “Casey” about the lack of plan. Azazel –the yellow-eyed demon’s name we learn- had a plan, but now he’s gone. She says that Sam was supposed to lead the demons, but now, there’s chaos. She says she was ready to follow Sam.
Sam and “the priest” arrive at the house. Sam calls for Dean, and “Casey” says it looks like Dean’s won. Sam tells Dean that the Father is with him, and Dean tells him to be careful. Sam turns around and sees the priest, also seeing his eyes turn black. Suddenly, Bobby shows up and shoots the Colt at the priest, but misses. Aiming again, the priest flicks his hand, sending Bobby flying. He then “throws” Sam into the car windshield. Ruby is there, too. Bobby and Ruby tell Sam to take the Colt and go.
The priest gets to the basement, subduing Dean, and freeing “Casey”. Dean rises, surprised that the priest is the other demon. She tells the priest to let Dean go, seemingly somehow affectionate toward him. Sam enters and shoots the “priest”. Dean tried to stop Sam before he shot “Casey”, but Sam emotionlessly shoots her.
Walking out to the sunny street, Dean asks Bobby if they made a difference. Dean thinks it’s a losing battle with lots of dead humans, including the ones possessed. He tells Bobby about Azazel’s implying that Sam isn’t the same. Bobby, not too convincingly, tells Dean that Sam seems all right.
Sam is packing, when Ruby walks into the hotel room. Sam looks disappointed, and complains that he had to kill two humans. She explains that demons don’t leave possessed bumans in the best shape, often ready to die anyway –he did them a favor. Sam questions her motives –again. She refuses to justify her actions. She’s there to help, it doesn’t matter why, and she’s can help Dean. Sam remarks that Dean’s deal is still on, and she hasn’t done anything yet. When he sounds unwilling to work with her, she asks for the Colt to offer to someone who will use it. He offers to use it on her, drawing it and pointing at her. She dares him, but he withdraws. She says it will be hard. There will be collateral damage. He says he doesn’t have to like it, and she responds that if he did, he wouldn’t be Sam. As if to cheer him she says she’ll be the little fallen angel on his shoulder.

Hye, I just watch till the 5th episode of this new season. and it’s awesome. with the ‘brand-new’ demon. Especially on this episode where Dean have such an interview with demon about hell and everything down there. and the most attractive thing in this season is about Ruby. She’s very cool and mysterious.
Well, I am in no patience waiting for the next 17 episodes.
Nur,
I liked the demon-in-the-basement dialog, too. I also like Ruby more than I expected. From what I’ve seen, I think a lot of people were expecting to like Bela more, but I actually like Ruby’s contribution to the season better, so far.
Keep watching and hoping!
