The Guardian (U.K.) Commentary Looks at Writers’ Strike vs. Prison Officers Strike (2007)
With Parliament looking at banning –again- strikes by personnel essential to the public, and incarcerated good, Zoe Williams compares –a little- and contrasts –a lot- last Summers’ U.K. Prison Officers’ strike to the current Writers’ Strike.
She makes some interesting points, definitely worth discussing, as can be seen by those who commented about the piece.
- How does a Hollywood Writers’ Strike stand up against a Prison Officers’ Strike?
- Do the writers lack the sympathy factor of under-paid public servants?
- Do the writers lose out a bit, since their $500 million impact on the entertainment industry pales in contrast to a prison full of under-supervised felons?
- Is the perception of writers’ wealth take away the appearance of a class struggle that helps the strikers’ cause in the public view?
