Supernatural Recap: 3.11 Mystery Spot
Sam’s days are very Groundhog Day.
Dean’s deaths are very Final Destination, way too abrupt, and too surprising.
Episode 3.11 – Mystery Spot
Airdate: 14 February 2008
Director: Phil Sgriccia
Writer: Jeremy Carver
Sam wakes suddenly to Asia’s “Heat of the Moment” “If I ever hear it again, I’m gonna kill myself.” They go about their morning routines. Every little nuance of Dean’s preparation seems to annoy or stand out to Sam. The cameras –and Sam- seem to obsess on the funny little details of Dean’s morning.
Sam and Dean enter a diner. Dean makes some silly remarks, “Hey, Tuesday! Pig in a poke!”. They order some breakfast, then discuss the job at hand. Dexter Hasselbeck, on his way to visit a tourist trap called The Mystery Spot, disappeared. Dean sounds incredulous about the nature of this job, but Sam argues that it could be like the Bermuda Triangle.
After hours, the boys break into The Mystery Spot. While they look around, the owner comes out with a shotgun. The owner, very nervous, accidentally shoots Dean in the chest. Sam runs over and holds him, tells the man to call 9-1-1. Dean dies in Sam’s arms.
With a start, Sam wakes to “Heat of the Moment”. Freaked out, obviously remembering Dean’s death, he watches Dean go through the same routine, saying the same things he did before.
Dean: What?
Sam: I don’t know.
Dean: You all right?
Sam: Man, I had a weird dream.
Dean: Oh yeah? Clowns or midgets?
They go to the diner, as before. The same chain of events –”Tuesday –pig in a poke!”- happen all over again. Sam frantically tells Dean that he’s been through this already. Dean is a little lost in the interchange, obviously thinking Sam is having an episode of some kind.
“Yesterday was Tuesday! Today is Tuesday, too!” “Good! You’re totally balanced.”
When he convinces Dean to go to the Mystery Spot, instead of waiting until close, Dean steps off the curb… Out of nowhere, a car slams into Dean, killing him, of course.
Suddenly, Sam wakes to “Heat of the Moment”, again.
Sam, “Dingo ate my baby crazy?” “How’d you know I was gonna say that?” Dean tries to calm Sam down. Sam tells him that he dies –that he’s died twice, and he doesn’t want to go through it again. Dean agrees they’ll figure it out.
Again, Dean says they’ll go after close. Sam tells him that he dies. Sam grabs Dean before the old man could run over Dean.
They talk to Mr. Korbiac. Sam asks him about strange things happening there. Mr. K tells them that it really … Hector Hasselbeck, the man missing, did he take the tour?
Sam is very tweaked.
Dean tells Sam they’ll lay low, and just keep him from dying. “Maybe, if we make it till tomorrow, we break the loop. Great! Lets’s grab some Chinese takeout!” Suddenly, a piano falls on him, smashing Dean flat.
Sam wakes to Asia again.
[It's weird. Kripke was right. This is sort of funny, mainly because of Jensen Ackles' smart aleck, laid back, funny delivery of all of his daily actions leading up to it. Then, the deaths are so uncharacteristic. They've lived through all kinds of supernatural, out of this world, ancient evils. Now, a nervous nelly with a shotgun, and a piano...?]
In the diner, Sam is morose, and Dean is agreeing to figure out what’s going on. Sam repeats Dean’s idea, that they . Dean changes his order –sausage instead of bacon! “See! Different day already.” As Dean eats the sausage, he begins to choke. “Dean! Dean!”
He-e-e-e-e-eat of the Moment
Dean slips in the shower. “Heat of the Moment”.
Dean: These tacos taste funny to you? “Heat of the Moment!”
Electrocuted.
Sam is taking an axe to the wall of The Mystery Spot. Dean is kneeling next to the owner, watching on as Sammy goes nuts. He gets up to stop Sam. Oops! Axe.
Heat of the Moment
At the diner, Sam puts the old man’s keys on the table. “Trust me. You don’t want him behind the wheel.” “Hey, Tuesday. Pig in a poke!” Sam asks the waitress to put a few more hours in at the archery range, “You’re a horrible shot.”
In frustration, having told Dean the story too many times, Sam tells, him that “this is the hundredth Tuesday I’ve been through.” As Dean is spewing off how silly Sam is, and that he doesn’t know what’s going to happen, Sam begins saying the exact same thing that Dean says, in precise unison. He even repeats the same insults that Dean has hurled at Sammy, probably every time this Tuesday has repeated.
Out on the street, after the same woman as a hundred times before bumps Dean, Dean asks if he’s ever done this… He doubles back, and stops the woman, returning to Sam with one of the flyers she’s carrying. They’re for the missing man, Dexter Hasselbeck. The woman is Hasselbeck’s daughter.
“Nice doggy!” Heat of the Moment.
At the diner, this time, Sam produces all sorts of information on Hasselbeck. The flyers piqued his interest. Dean, “When’d you have time to do all this research.”
As they walk out of the diner, Sam fixates on an empty plate. One man at the counter, though, has done something different, which never happens. After 100 Tuesdays having maple syrup, he has suddenly had strawberry.
When the man leaves, Sam goes after him with a stake. The man, at first claims to be Ed Coleman. Sam tells him he knows what he is, and that they’ve killed one like him already. The man’s face changes. It’s the trickster they thought they’d killed once before.
Dean asks about Hasselbeck. The trickster said, “He said he didn’t believe in wormholes, so I dropped him in one.” “One, yes, it is fun. Two, this is so not about killing Dean. This joke is on you, Sam. Watching your brother die, everyday, forever.” “You can’t save your brother, no matter what.” “You can’t take a joke? Fine.” He snaps his fingers.
Sam awakes to “Back in Time” by Huey Lewis. Sam is excited. It’s Wednesday. Dean hates this song. Dean remembers Sam being weird all day, and running into the trickster. Sam is so excited. He’s ready to pack up and get out of town… no breakfast.
Dean is loading up the Impala. He turns around, and a mugger is pointing a pistol at him. Sam, inside the motel, hears a shot. “Dean!” He runs outside to find Dean lying on the ground. He runs down, but Dean is already dead.
In a sad and poignant montage, covering at least three months, Sam is obviously on a quest. We see him driving at night, his eyes full of anger and grief. He pulls a bullet out of his own chest, and sews up the wound. Motel walls are covered with newspaper clippings and surveillance camera stills. We hear Bobby’s voice on voice mail, several times, telling Sam what a great job he did taking out demons, and killing vampires. Finally, we hear a message from Bobby that he’s found the trickster.
Sam shows up at The Mystery Spot. Bobby is there, and tells Sam that he needs a gallon of fresh blood to summon the trickster. When Sam, without a pause, starts to rush off to get some fresh blood, Bobby stops him. He tells Sam that he can’t murder someone. Bobby did it to trick Sam into meeting and talking to him. Sam is vehement, so Bobby hands Sam a knife. He tells Sam that, if he wants Dean back so badly, to kill him, instead of a “civilian”. Bobby pleads with Sam to do it, then turns his back, and kneels. Sam looks at him, considering the scene. Then he stakes Bobby, saying he’s doing it because “you’re not Bobby!” But Bobby lies on the floor, looking an awful lot like a dead man… a dead Bobby.
Sam calls out, “Bobby! Bobby!” Then, Bobby disappears on the floor. The stake flies back, past Sam’s head and into the hand of the trickster.
Sam begs him to bring Dean back. The trickster says it’s a lesson he’s been trying to drill into Sam’s head. Their mutual obsession with saving each other isn’t healthy. More than that, it’s Sam’s weakness. Sam’s obsession to save Dean only leads to blood and pain. Dean’s your weakness. The bad guys know it, too.” [So, the Trickster is a good guy. Sam begs.
“Back in Time” –Dean’s awake. “I know. No Asia. This station sucks.” “It’s Wednesday.” “Yeah, which usually follows Tuesday.” Sam tells Dean he can’t go out alone. “I had a really weird dream.” “Clowns or midgets?” Sam lingers in the motel for a moment, pensively. Then they leave.
And, Dude! What about that promo for Just in Bello!!!

It’s really disconcerting how OCD Sam became after Dean “died” and he hunted alone for 3 months. However, it made sense when i thought about it. After hundreds of who knows how many Tuesdays and being unable to stop Dean from dying, Sam must feel like he has no control over what happens. So to get back that feeling he focuses on what he can control. Also scary how the weapons in the trunk of the Impala went to looking like how their dad’s truck bed did.
Best part of this episode was Dean dying of food poisoning from Taco Bell.
