Supernatural Spoiler: 3.16 – No Quarter (Season Finale)

Episode 3.16 – No Quarter [Season Finale]
Airdate: May 15, 2008

This one is big for you squeamish about spoilers, so I’ll put the meat of the spoilage after the break…

  • It sounds like Dean actually goes to Hell. So, this will mean needing to bring him back, somehow. This is unconfirmed, but big.
  • Ellen Harvelle was supposed to come back, as the boys’ other many, still breathing, friends are. Last I heard, the deal did not work out with her.

Come back for more on this one. We should have more details soon, I hope. What do you think about big shockers in the season finale of Supernatural? Leave a comment below with your unbridled opinions.

    I was hoping Dean would go to hell, especially when I heard there was going to be a S4, so there could be a cliffhanger. Getting him back and his dealing with Sam (if Sam gets his powers back) as well as the aftereffects of going to hell is going to make for a meaty S4!

    OMG! OMG! OMG! I don^t know if i wanth Dean going a hell… Then he will not be 100% Dean either in season 4 right..??? Is the seme thing that happen with Sam… But maybe they have a plan and Dean will have his own history about this…Well… We have to waith and see… i can^t waith!!!!! ^_^)

    I CAN’T WAIT EITHER!
    What’s confounding me is whether Dean is going to be dragged bodily into hell. If only his soul is taken, then Bobby and Sam are going to have to keep his body on ice, or when he comes back, he’s going to be a spirit like Ruby and John. Man, this series has me all in knots! (But in a good, clutching the edge of my seat way!)

    I can’t wait to see the season’s finale, but I don’t like the idea of Dean returning half demon. It goes against everything he ever worked for. It would be like being sick for him, dirty or something. But I’m sure the writers will keep us breathless til season 4!

    If Dean does go to Hell…then that sucks because it means he will come back like dead…not even really human and it means that Sam and he will be at war. I’d prefer that Sam got his powers back to save Dean and that in doing so he becomes somewhat evil…but that he can be still saved by Dean later on. Even the two brothers fighting makes me sick to my stomach. Kripke is going to ruin what he has created. And all this time I thought that it was the CW Network that was slowly killing the series with their lack of promoting the series …but it’s Krip and Crew that are going to destroy this great sci-fi drama?

    Kripke’s head is getting too big! He doesn’t even want to include the Heavenly side of things into the Winchester saga, and I totally disagree with him …demons were never human. They were once ANGELS , Gods heavenly creatures who turned on him and were sent into hell.

    I have to agree, Kripke is going mess this show up and destroy overall ratings if he kills Dean. Someone mentioned peviously, the boys need eachother, and I have to say, nothing could be more true. Dean and Sam have been through too much, given too much, and sacrificed even more for them to loose eachother this way in the end of season 3. I also did not like the ending for season 1, and this is exactly what they did then. With the exception being, at least at the end of season 1, they ended it with the possibility that there might not be another season, so that worked for the show then. Unfortunately, that kind of gut wrenching blow for the finale may not work as well this season, due to the loss of shows to satisfy an entire 22 episodes thus making an entire season, thanks to the writers’ strike. Many fans are too far on the edge about Dean and his deal made situation, that to kill him after such a long break in the airing of the episodes might push fans over the edge and the fans may not come back. Has Kripke truly considered the ramifications of this decision? Are we as fans going to decide that after, almost 3 years of faithful viewing, willingly subject ourselves to such heartbreak? Death of the eldest Winchester brother? I personaly will not. I just might happen to forget the showtime and or channel that Supernatural comes on. It is not better to leave us with only the hope that Sam will be determined to try and do more after the death of Dean, but instead with the knowledge that Sam has done something in regards to bringing Dean back from Hell. However, if they don’t bring Dean back at all, or only as the demon Dean, both being equally damaging to the entire appeal of the show, would completely ruin the avid fan base for sure.

    Perhaps Sam will become evil and assume his position as the anti-christ. If he doesn’t hold Dean’s contract himself, this would certainly be one way to get it since he would have the authority to control what happened to Dean. This way they could both be reunited in Hell! One happy family. :)

    man, the worst thing eric kripke could do is to pull a “charmed”…where they kill off one sibling and replace it with a long-lost, newly found one!

    personally, if he kills dean, i am so not watching the show anymore. there’s really no point, seeing how the best thing about the show is the relationship between the brothers. no dean, no more relationship.

    hope he knows what he is doing

    April 5th, 2008 | 3:44 pm

    Just because he’s killing Dean, it doesn’t mean he won’t be back for the new season. What gets me angry is when fans throw around comments like “Im not watching if Dean dies” or “Kripke is ruining the show” The worse thing Kripke could do is not kill Dean. That would the stupid ‘good-guys always win’ bullshit we see in Disney movies. Grow up you guys and open your minds. If Dean goes to hell, there will obviously be a way out for him. Ruby got out didn’t she? Besides, there are way too many unanswered questions left regarding Sam and his mom, Azazel and wether or not Dean and John were ever really related to him.

    Dean’s going to hell and Sam’s going full on demon to save his ass. THAT is good television. The rest of you guys can go switch to Prison Break or some crap because clearly your tatse in television is lacking.

    i really dont want dean to die or go to hell. they’ve already had sam die and bring him back, why would they do the same for dean. cuz we know he’ll come back. plus dean is supposed to be 100% himself.. who else will watch after sammy and make sure sam doesnt turn into the dark leader? the 100% dean can do that. or at least save sam. i see dean as a kind of conflicted guardian angel. one that is a bit hard but good. one that is sam’s protector. but whatever that does happen.. ill still watch the series and ill still love the show always. and of course ill still love dean.

    What get’s me angry are people who think we don’t have a right to express a negative opinion. I personally don’t to see ANOTHER brought-back-from the dead episode–IT’S GETTING OLD, and is just plain laziness on the part of the writers to do it again. Can’t they come up with something original for the end of season 3? Also, perhaps some of us have no desire to see some cheesy interpretation of Hell, nor do we wish to see the Sam and Ruby Save Dean show.

    I’m not sure Kripke will go the Hell route since he said himself that the network would never give him the budget to film the kind of Hell he envisioned. Now, I did hear rumor of a possible anteroom to Hell, a sort of inbetween holding cell of sorts, of course I’m not sure he’ll even go that route.

    I suspect that Sam will embrace his “boy king” status to save his big brother and command that the contract be voided. I’m thinking the big finale will be Sam and Dean going head to head as Dean tries to prevent his brother’s cascade into darkness and we’re left with some big jaw dropper moment between Sam and Dean and then fade out until fall and the new season.

    Now, what I’d like to see is Sam tap into those hibernating abilities and toast every demon around him and Dean including the one collecting the contract. I envision an almost shockwave like release of power from Sam and the demons being burned to ash in their footsteps. However, no matter what I can’t imagine there won’t be a little darkside Sam at the finale. I guess we’ll have to see.

    All I know is that I’m looking forward to April 24 and new episodes!

    Okay, having read just a few pages of the Network script for episode 3.16 — I’m not at sure how this finale is going to play out. So, I’m pretty eager to watch it.

    Oh, the last could be considered a spoiler if you do not even like to know episode titles in advance, so if you don’t stop reading, now :-)

    ~~~~~~
    Also, there has been a title change to the finale:
    It was formerly called “No Rest for the Wicked,” there was also an earlier working title “Hell and Back”, however that was never attached to a script that I saw. Yet, another title change, it appears it’s new tentative title is “No Quarter”
    Maybe they will make up their minds pretty soon :-) Well, if they keep “No Quarter” it would be pretty good considering it’s meaning, plus it’s also a Led Zepplin song!
    April 8th, 2008 | 6:17 pm
    Hi Marie,
    I goggled it, but I also found it posted afterwards at a SN forum I was reading and here is what was written:
    “A victor gives no quarter when the victor shows no clemency or mercy and refuses to spare the life in return for the surrender at discretion (unconditional surrender) of a vanquished opponent.
    “Friends all..In Quarter, and in termes like Bride, and Groome.” so “no quarter” may also mean to refuse to enter in to an agreement (relations) with an enemy attempting to surrender.
    Also, you should look up the Led Zepplin lyric’s for the song, too! They seem to be a bit telling :)
    Here are the lyrics for “Give No Quarter” by Led Zepplin:
    Close the doors, put out the light
    You know they won’t be home tonight
    The snow falls hard and don’t you know
    The winds of Thor are blowing cold
    They’re wearing steel that’s bright and true
    They carry news that must get through
    They choose the path where no-one goes
    They hold no quarter,
    They hold no quarter.
    Oh…
    Walking side by side with death
    The devil mocks their every step
    The snow drives back the foot that’s slow
    The dogs of doom are howling more
    They carry news that must get through
    To build a dream for me and you
    They choose the path that no one goes
    They hold no quarter,
    They ask no quarter,
    They hold no quarter,
    They ask no quarter…they think about no quarter…With no quarter quarter.
    Oh No…
    ~~~~~
    I’m so looking forward to the finale :-)

    Ozzie Chico….There is a difference between Fallen Angels and Demons. Demons are the fallen angels creatures, the fallen angels are the GENERALS of the demons…Some people say that demons were created in hell by the fallen angels, others say they were once human but there is a difference….ALso anyone have any opinion on the significance of what LILITH is biblically? She’s the demon of perversion and destroyer of wombs…..thoughts anyone?

    One thing I DON’T WANT to see is Sam using uber powers to save poor helpless Dean. If this is to be show of two brothers, then keep them even Kripke. That being said, I hope Dean does go bodily to hell and that he comes back bodily and with newer knowledge of the demon world to help them fight this war.

    Sam can get his uber powers after, I don’t care, but what I am getting sick of is everything being about Sam and only Sam. So, screw you Kripke if you can’t make this about both brothers.

    Also sending Dean to hell will FINALLY tie Dean into the mytharc, something Kripke has no problem doing with his favorite characters like Ruby and Bela, but refuses to do with Dean.

    We’ll see if I will be back for season 4. If this turns out to be the SAM WINCHESTER HOUR, I’m done.

    I hope that dean does not go to hell and come back as a demon it would just be wrong. I think it might happen though i think they made to much of a big deal that dean has become tired of his life now!!!!

    I really hope that sam’s powers come back and he save’s dean as dean has sacrificed everything for dean.

    Also i think it would be good tv if the brother’s ended up fighting against each other.

    Actually, from what I read from Kripke just today in the new “Supernatural Season Two Companion Book” that Dean has always been apart of the myth arc and that SN is more his story than Sam’s, and always has been. It has always been more about Dean dealing with ramifications of his brother’s destiny and what his place is in being a big brother. Kripke also said there was a reason Dean got a better deal than his dad did when he sold his soul and it would be revealed in time and it will prove very troubling to Dean.

    I really don’t care one way or the other about Dean going to Hell or not. I still feel after the numerous occasions that Dean has saved his brother that it is Sam’s time to step to the plate and if that means uber powers come to a head then so be it. Perhaps, they will burn themselves out or something, who knows. But, Dean going “bodily” to Hell I don’t think I could buy. I don’t think anyone goes there in a corporeal sense. It’s just that Dean has been near death a few times already and it’s getting a *little* old when compared to Sam, Sam has only had AHBL, part 1 (mortally wounded and dies in his brother’s arms).
    Season 1: “Faith” — damaged heart and given a couple weeks to a month to live.
    “Devil’s Trap” — severely injured by the YED in the cabin, major blood loss, etc., then the car wreck at the end of the same episode left him on death’s door.
    Season 2: “In My Time of Dying” — comatose, on life support, he actually dies and needs to be resusitated at one point, etc.

    Then of course, at the end of the season he sells his soul and has one year to live, basically becoming the perpetual ‘dead man walking’ until the wrap up that story arc of the “deal.”

    So, if he does *die* at some point in the finale then they better find a believeable way to keep his body alive until they can get his soul back.

    At any rate, I’m just looking forward to new episodes starting :-)

    @KayDee & Mariale: Interesting. I wonder. They would have to avoid all the possible pitfalls.

    I hope, whether he actually dies or not, that they are at the top of their games at the time they write, direct, and everything. I think, either way, there are many possible problems for the writers.

    They don’t want the Charmed scenario –blech! I love Rose MacGowan –more with the machine gun leg- but that’s about the time that the other two began the weird baby-talk deal. What was up with that?!?

    Well, having come across some recent rumblings about the finale and if the rumblings do prove to be correct it appears that in the finale there will be no solution to Dean getting out of the deal and there were hints that we may get to see Hell at least on some scale. Now, if it goes this route then I suspect that will be the big jaw dropping OMG moment that keeps getting mentioned for the finale. I was hoping we’d have a resolution to the deal arc in the finale and the carry over to S4 would be the fallout of that resolution, but based on the rumblings I’ve heard I’m not too sure that will be the way it goes.

    Maybe, Kripke found a way to film a little bit of the Hell he had in mind even with their small budget. I know he had said he didn’t want to film Hell because the network would never give him the budget to film his vision of Hell, but maybe they’re going the anteroom to Hell route or something, who knows ….

    I guess we’ll have to wait and see how it all pans out. At any rate, I’m excited for the four remaining new episodes!

    SN has been the best show on TV since it aired. With that being said, I have always wished it wasn’t on the CW. They have done a great job, but some of the bigger, darker concepts to come along CANT be used on a child friendly, free cable channel. What happen to all the BA weapons in the trunk from Epis. 1 Seas. 1? why is there ALWAYS more build up then finish? I do not believe it is lack of writing quality, depth of story, or acting…..this blame falls firmly on the finacial source, and network the sets the guidelines. So, take it easy on Kripke and the team cause they always deliver FAR, FAR above the CW standard, with what seems like the odds against them. And, as a side note….How can a show about the battle between humans and spirits on Earth and in hell not focus on the main characters dives into death? how else can the really learn about there opponents? Dont focus on the deaths, but the way we get there, and what is learned from those experiences!! I for one am FULLY confident in the Kripke team. What ever they craft up I cant wait to see what happens!!!

    April 29th, 2008 | 9:00 am

    well maybe they will get him out of the deal like at the last minuet cause i don’t think he would kill dean he is to much of a important character and he would lose alot of viewers cause dean is what makes the show funny and if sam is by himself then it would be boring i just hope the krpkie knows what he’s doing

    heres the summery for the episode:

    DEAN’S TIME IS UP It’s 30 hours before Dean’s (Jensen Ackles) deal with the crossroads demon is up and Dean, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Bobby (Jim Beaver) are searching for Lilith, who holds the contract. They discover her location and Sam summons Ruby (Katie Cassidy) for help despite Dean’s protests. Ruby warns them they aren’t ready to fight Lilith yet but they steal her knife and depart for New Harmony, Indiana. In a battle to the death, Sam, Dean and Bobby take on Lilith and all her demons in a last ditch effort to save Dean’s life.

    ive already read somewhere that dean will die and go to hell. maybe it is false.. and i hope so. but i do no that if dean did die and go to hell then he wouldnt permanately be gone. the first episode of the fourth season will be when sam brings him back. cuz no matter what.. sam cannot and will not live without dean. he will find a way. now i do hope he finds a way to actually save him. cuz i really dont want dean to go to hell; even for a few moments. but since theres supposed to be some shocker cliffhanger.. i really am baffled at what will play out. all i kno is i cant wait! :] supernatural is the best show ever.

    What are you talking about “cheesy interpretation of Hell” ?? Maybe YOU don’t wanna see it but I for one know a LOT of people who wanna see the writers’ version of hell. They have managed to make this show the most believeable of all of the supernatural shows on television. I mean they used TRUE Urban Legends and Ghost Legends, they didn’t just create the stories outta thin air, so I think it would definitely be interesting to see what their version of hell would be like! And also come on people, enough with the “I don’t want Dean to die” Crap. You know it’s coming, so just suck it up and deal with it. Everything is going to be just fine. I personally don’t know where the writers are going with this or season 4 for that matter but I doubt Dean is going to become less than human OR a demon, so relax. And for those who are worried about Jensen Ackles being removed or replaced…Come on now! You know the writers aren’t ever going to get rid of him. Plus, both Jensen and Jared are already signed on for a 4th season. So don’t worry so much. OH ya 1 more thing… People, take it from a Wicca who knows quite a bit on the topic. Demons were never Angels. They have absolutely nothing to do with one another, that’s just something the Bible tells you to make you scared of betraying God. Blah blah. Advice: read the Bible less, it’s only going to make you crazy. Try reading more into Wiccan history, you might be surprised at what you find out. ;)

    Tru, I totally agree with what you said !

    it’s just hard…Because when I saw what happened to Bella, I thought that this is how Dean is gonna die… and I really felt bad about Bella…and they make it sound like there’s NO way out of it !!
    and it’s really sad because at the end Dean really doesn’t wanna die or go to hell !!
    you can see the fear and the sadness in his eyes when he went to that guy who told him that he Know things about people !!

    and the Promo…. just WOW !! I was totally speechless on that one !!!

    Here is my prediction for this season finale: Dean is going to die, and that is how they are going to end the season, probably with a “To Be Continued…” and I figure sometime in the first few episodes of Season 4 Sam is going to find a way to get him out. 100% all natural Dean :) (that’s just my guess)

You know how Sam came back from the dead and the YED was like are you sure he is 100% Sammy? So I hope Dean doesn’t come back and Ruby is like are you sure he is 100% Dean.

    I think it is a cheat and very lazy to have basically the same cliffhanger last summer, all season, and this summer. Resolve it before the end of the season and give us a new cliffhanger. Keep Dean out of hell and give us something original. I think it is off-balance that we never see an angel or something good to help the brothers.

    well everyone thinks dean is gonna go to hell and he probably will cause there is no way for him to get out of his deal accept for killing lilith and she will be returning for the 4th season so apparently dean does go to hell
