Supernatural Discussion: Episode 3.16 No Rest for the Wicked

by Jonathan on May 18th, 2008

The finale finally hit us. Dean’s contract came due. Lilith wasn’t nearly defeated, and any damage that did befall her was definitely too late.

  • Two words: Bon, Jovi. Nice, weird touch, Mr. Kripke.
  • I’ve wished all season that Dean would have given Sam more credit, and trust that Ruby really did want to help them. You had to question her motives, yes, but they’ve had to compromise to get what they wanted before.
  • How about that Dean vs. Ruby fight in the opening of the episode? It was quick, but exciting, no?
  • This whole episode was so incredibly tense. I should have put a piece of leather between my teeth.
  • Where did Lilith go? I’m sure they’ll have her regrouping somewhere to rear her head again.
  • New Harmony, Indiana has a strong, and interesting, spiritual background. It was created by a German communal sect (The Harmonists), and was later sold to an early social reformer, who, early on, held a strong disregard for religion, and later a strong affinity for spiritualism.
  • Those darn Winchester boys and Ruby’s knife. It was her knife, after all.
  • Given just a second more, could Sam have used the knife successfully on Lilith?
  • Obviously, Lilith’s seemingly strongest weapon had no effect on Sam, at all. Is there more, though, that scared her about Sam? Did she then see something like what Dean saw in Sam’s face, at the beginning of the episode?

What did you think of No Rest for the Wicked? How are you going to spend your Supernatural vacation?

Well, the finale has come and gone. I tried to wait until DVRs and VCRs had been watched, and people in Pacific time had a chance to watch without spoiling virgin eyes… but I feel quite strongly about this episode and so I need to get it out. Vent, complain, applaud and all around sigh–wishing for just that little more that made Season 1 and Season 2 of Supernatural so magical.

From previous postings and reviews, I think you can get a sense that I’ve been dissatisfied with Season 3 from the very start. I don’t know what it was exactly, and if I could put my finger on it I would write to Kripke and co. with constructive criticism. But there’s an elusive element that just hasn’t been there with consistency. It’s hard when your favorite show of all time doesn’t live up to expectations (or perhaps it’s my expectations that are just too high?)

Admittedly the music was back, the car was back, Bobby was back… all good things….almost comforting things that we have come to know and love about our favorite series.

But, something leaves me a bit dissatisfied with the finale.

The story was ok. A few heartbreaking brotherly moments, as well as a few giggles in there for good measure. Strangely, it was Sam with the the witty quips. And as usual, the dialogue between Dean and Ruby was just plain miserable. There is just NO chemistry with her character. Dare I say I even preferred Bela over Ruby. I’m sure Katie Cassidy is a lovely girl…but she just can’t act, and her conversations with Dean always seemed forced and juvenile.

The little girl possessed by Lillith was creepy as hell, as all children seem to be portrayed in Kripke’s storylines. The young actress did an exceptional job with evil manipulation.

Stealing Ruby’s “magic demon killing blade” and just bounding in to Lillith’s territory seemed like a half-baked idea from the beginning, and set the story up nicely for failure.

Although I was wondering about Bobby and the holy water…nicely played with an in-ground sprinkler system.

Lillith in Ruby? SOOOO totally predictable. So much so that I was disappointed. And the whole Lillith light destruction thing leaving Sammy unharmed… kinda predictable too…. I hate when plot twists are mundane. And really, had Sammy been a little quicker with the knife, Lillith would be dead already…. a bit contrived…. But does this mean that Ruby is dead? Her little demon body all used up. Please, let it be so.

It was a nice flashback to Mystery Spot on the day Dean died in the parking lot…Sam crying over his brother’s blood soaked body. You’d think Sam would’ve been a bit more prepared. It’s the point the Trickster was trying to make all along. Although the hellhounds did shred Dean in a brilliant, agony-laden farewell to Dean for Season 3. Now, where Dean went is a point to ponder…it didn’t look like the hell he was warned of, but I could see how having chains running through your body, coursing with electric current could be a bit uncomfortable. He certainly didn’t seem to be greeted by the welcoming committee of demons he’d sent back to the bowels of Hell.

But major kudos to Jensen for a great Dean death scene…..and really nice continuity as we’re left with the same echo as in AHBL 1…. Dean screaming for Sam… different reason, same heartbreaking cry.

As mentioned, I’ve been a pretty harsh critic of Season 3, and I think we can blame the writer’s strike for part of it, but the season finale was a nice even wrap to the yo-yo that preceded it. Nice but not stupendous. Good, but not gut wrenchingly great.

If nothing else, it’s a juicy morsel to ponder over the summer break, and a reason to look forward to Season 4 with an open mind and clean slate. Let’s hope for a nice clean run of 22 new episodes starting next fall.

And let’s REALLY hope that there’s a tv station still alive to air my favorite show!

At least the CW is so desperate now for attention that we I heard are getting Supernatural come Sept. 4th, 2008. THANK GOD. And I mean it I really do thank GOD.

I liked it! More than I thought I would. The Bon Jovi thing threw me. I am glad they did it ’cause I love Bon Jovi and I don’t think they get that much respect.

Dean is in hell and I want to know how he is going to get out of that one.

I love Jensen and Jared and look forward to September.

Hah..just finished watching… Couldn’t and wouldn’t before I had all my job and school things out of the way cause I knew I would be a mess after this one. But to my surprise — I only feel a bit sad (Well ofc about Dean and the fact that the season just ended) but since Sammy is a damn smart kid I am sure he will figure something out next season, so no permanent harm done…Err…I hope.
But my Supernatural vacation is gonnabe spent taking part in fanfiction writing contest. If anyone wants to spend their summer messing around with SN too, then I could always use a beta reader :) ;)

The season wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be, because they can go on without dean so obviesly sam will bring him back. the wost is that we won’t have new ep for monts.
what fanficction contest, what you have to do? I’m a corious.

It’s in livejoural: spn_summergen. All writers give 3-6 prompts and then they are anonymously switched with each other and we have six weeks to write them into stories.
The registration has already ended, but as I said — I could really use a beta reader :)

(Hmm…well it’s kind of like editor with official writings. A person that reads the fanfiction before it’s published and points out the mistakes that he or she sees and gives her opinion)

Am I the only one, but does the whole “green hell” thing gets weirder every time I see it? :/

it’s just me or is weird that in the end, when lilith is in ruby’s body, she can “controle ” sam but a litle later after killing dean and see that she can’t kill sam she can’t “controle” him anymore?
this mean that sam is starting to controle his demonic powers?

  • Randiel

I was wondering about the Lilith/ruby against Sam thing too. And here goes nothing, but well, maybe it is that under extreme pressure Sam’s demonic powers just kick in. Like when he had a vision about Dean getting shot and was able to move the cupboard. So… Maybe seeing Dean get killed got Sammy really-really pissed and he was so mad that was again able to use his powers.

(Hehee, welcome on board :) I would be glad if you’d help me and be beta-reader. I won’t be doing any real writing till June, but we could chit-chat about the prompts given to me. So I’m available at heleneloonet at gmail dot com and contact me, if you have some spare time)

it’s a good point but if that’s true souldn’t he been able to stop lilith when she was killing dean?

Hmm..yeah, that’s a good point. :/ That theory still needs some work. Maybe he just wasn’t really getting what was going on, like it hit him when Dean was already dead… Ok, gonna think about it some more.
