The screams of the young girl echo through the woods to the nearby town and resonate in the halls of the even nearer church. The camera slowly and silently pans across the townspeople as they circle the edge of the woods and herd the Golls family into the woods to spend the rest of their lives there for their sinful ways. The family of seven huddles together, carrying the younger children into the woods as the townspeople cling crucifixes and cry out prayers for the Golls family’s redemption.

One by one the family dies from starvation, dehydration, scurvy, sicknesses, malnutrition, etc; until only the father is left and with his final words he curses the woods and all who enter.

Act I: Scene 2

Open scene in present day Golls Woods.

Over 10 years later, a young man is running through Golls woods listening to his cd player when he is attacked by a wolf. He falls to the ground, dead instantly from the vicious attack. The wolf smells the body and disappears.

Sam and Dean are sitting at Bobby’s house when Sam pulls out a folded newspaper from a nearby table top pile. Same points to the headline under the “Advance Reporter” headline that reads “Local businessman killed by wolf.”

Dean: (Hands back newspaper to Sam) “Exactly why is that story our problem? So a man is killed by a wolf in the woods. Quick, call the Brothers Grimm…I think you have a classic on your hands. Maybe Snow White can help you this time.”

Sam: (Sam leans forward in the chair and hands Dean a sheet with Northwest, Ohio regional statistics) “This is a big deal because wolves are not an animal found in that region any more, none-the-less those woods.”

Dean: (Dean leans back in his chair with a thoughtful look on his face) “Maybe it was a dog or an ancestor of the canine.”

Sam: “No way! Investigators never found any footprints or markings that a wolf had ever been there other than the tooth that was found near the man’s jugular vein. It is like the wolf never existed, or just disappeared.”

Dean: “Ok, so we go and check this out and miss out on a legit case?”

Sam: “No, I think this is a legit case. We need to check it out for the sake of future innocent people who might get hurt if we don’t solve this soon.”

Dean: “Fine…but I get pick the motel and restaurant this time. No more of this health food stuff. I need something edible before I die of starvation (Dean gets out of the chair, grabs his coat, and head to the door). Let’s go.”

Sam: (Follows Dean toward the door while hollering after him) “Your heart will thank me for the health food later Dean” (Gives a nod to Bobby and closes the door behind him).

Act I: Scene 3

Open scene as Metallicar rounds the Golls woods entrance. The boys park the car and get out.

Sam and Dean arrive at Golls woods around dusk. They walk to the scene of the latest attack to investigate. There is graffiti now littering the trees and surrounding areas, no doubt created by young teenagers. This is the last straw for Dean as he spins around and faces Sam eye to eye.

Dean: “We came clear here for some child’s prank?!”

Sam: “We don’t know that. Let me dig into some local lore and history files before we rule this out.”

Dean: “No way. There are threats, real threats out there Sammy; we are not spending another minute on this case. Do you hear me!?” (Spins around and heads toward the car).

Sam: (grabs Dean’s arm in an effort to stop him) “Listen. I know this looks bad.” (Dean nods head as if to emphasis the words as the understatement they are). “I just think there is something more to this. If this really was a kid’s prank then wouldn’t the local businessman still be alive?”

Dean: “Today’s kids are really messed up, you tell me.”

Sam: “Just give me 24 hours. That is all I need. If I don’t find anything then we leave. I will pack up your things and we will be out of here faster than a NASCAR racer at Daytona. If I do find something though, you have to stay and help me investigate. Ok?”

Dean: “Fine, but I prefer my socks be rolled, not folded.”

(Sam begins to follow Dean, but notices an owl feather near the tree trunk. He leans down to get a closer look).

Dean: “Let’s go Sam!”

(Sam scoops up the feather and quickly heads out of the woods).

Act I: Scene 4

Opening scene at the boys’ motel room.

(Dean wakes up, rolls over, and sits up. He looks over at Sam’s bed only to find the sheets still made up and Sam’s bag untouched. He rolls over, mumbling incoherent words, and goes back to sleep.)

Act I: Scene 5

(Sam is standing in the woods after having found species of owl that the feather had belonged to at the local library. He is baffled as the species is no longer found in the region. Dean saunters up behind Sam, scaring poor Sam and causing him to drop the feather. Dean leans down and picks up the feather before handing it to Sam.)

Dean: “Find anything Sam?”

Sam: “As a matter of fact, yes I have. I think that perhaps we have a supernatural being who is shape shifting into animals who are no longer found in this region. My question is why? I mean, they must want to be found, otherwise they would have changed into an animal that is common around here so that no attention is drawn to them.”

Dean: “Sure nature boy. Just remember that we are now reaching 15 hours into our agreement, and in 9 hours we are leaving this cowpoke town. Tick tock, tick tock.”

(Dean turns to go and comes face to face with a grizzly bear. The boys turn to run but the bear swipes Sam with his paw, throwing him against a nearby tree knocking him unconscience. The bear then turns to Dean who is scooped up by the large beast who swipes then rakes his claw across Dean’s leg. Dean hollers in pain which draws a nearby ranger to the scene. The bear disappears before Dean’s eyes leaving Dean in pain and fear. The ranger calls for help and quickly addresses the boy’s wounds. Sam wakes up slightly and looks at Dean.)

Sam: “Still think these attacks are kid’s pranks?”

(Dean looks over to the medics deep in thought).

Act II: Scene 1

Open scene in hospital.

(Sam and Dean’s wounds are dressed, and the boys are released from the hospital. On their way out of the ER rooms the ghost of a young Native American brave appears to the boys. The brave states the name Hollister and disappears. The boys look at each other in confusion.)

(Suddenly the ER doors fly open and the body of a young boy is wheeled in on a stretcher. The blanket covering the boy is bloody and the nurses begin hooking up the necessary equipment to save the boy. Sam and Dean pull aside one of the ambulance medics as they are preparing to leave the ER entrance. They find out the young boy was attacked by what the boy described to be an alligator at a pond in Golls woods.)

Act II: Scene 2

Open scene at the boy’s motel room.

(Sam hobbles in the front door to Dean who is sitting watching the local news while typing on the computer.)

Dean: “Find anything?”

Sam: “Nine people have been attacked since May of 2007. It also appears that many of these creatures who are appearing have never been known to this region, at least not since prehistoric times. The ones, who have at one time called this area home, have not done so since the mid 1800s.”

Dean: “Great well I found something too. It appears that around the time that all these animals disappeared, several tribes of Native Americans in this region and all over the country were slaughtered by settlers who wanted their land.”

Sam: “Wait, so the animals disappeared around the time that the Native Americans were killed?”

Dean: “Yeah, why? What are you thinking?”

Sam: “Well some Native American tribes’ religious rights of passage include being linked to a spirit animal.”

Dean: “But if their spirit animals are animals not natural to this region then that means that several braves from all around the country are here, why?”

Sam: (Scoops up a pile of papers on the end stand.) “Whoa, I think I found our connection.”

Dean: (Stands up and heads to Sam’s side.) “What is it?”

Sam: “All the killings began in May of 2007 right?”

(Dean nods his head).

Sam: “Think of what supernatural event happened in that time.”

(Dean’s eyes widen as he realizes what Sam is saying).

Dean: “The Devil’s Gate was opened. That means that a demon is most likely feeding on the anger of the braves for their unjust deaths, and it has summoned them to do its bidding. We have to stop this before it goes any further.”

(Both boys grab their jacket and shuffle out the door).

Act II: Scene 3

Open scene in Golls Woods.

(The boys are standing in an opening in Golls Woods. Suddenly, a deer begins stampeding toward Sam and Dean. Sam reads a chant from the Latin book in his hands and the deer disappears. Again, Sam reads a chant and a young 1800s boy appears before them. Stepping back, the young boy angrily lashes out at the boys before being stopped by the make-shift tree branch pentagram the boys set up on the ground. Dean steps forward, prepared with his interrogation.)

Dean: “We know who you are…Hollister.”

Hollister: “Is that your form of flattery? You need to work on that.” (He changes from a young boy to a mid twenty aged man with a goatee.)

Sam: “How are you holding them captive?”

Hollister: “It really is quite easy to latch onto the anger that already exists in you humans. It turns your soul black, and makes you oh so easy to do my will. You know what I am saying don’t you Sam? That dark feeling inside that churns when so many bad things have happened, that feeling that has been slowly burning since you were brought back to life last year.”

Dean: “He doesn’t know what you are talking about, you evil son-of-a-bitch. Sam… read.”

Sam: (Stands baffled for a moment). “Omni croi…”

(Hollister sighs and closes his eyes. Dean is suddenly pulled to the ground by a large snake. While fighting him off, Sam discontinues his reading and rushes to his aide only to be attacked by a badger. Dean grabs the knife and stabs the snake. The snake shifts into a young brave and disappears. Dean scoops up the book and completes the reading of the passage. Just before Hollister is sent to hell, he whispers “You will one day face a Sam more evil than me.”)

(The badger disappears and a bloody Sammy lies on the ground. Dean rushes to his side just as the spirits of the braves appear before them. The group thanks the boys and then leaves in a peaceful white light.)

Dean: “You ok?”

Sam: “I think so.”

Dean: “Ok…so I guess I owe you dinner tonight”

(Sam laughs and accepts Dean’s hand and he attempts to stand. They walk toward the Metallicar.)

Sam: “Dean?”

Dean: “Yeah Sam?”

Sam: “The demon may be right you know?”

Dean: “About what Sam?”

Sam: “Me being evil. I feel that anger he was talking about. He might be right.”

Dean: “He is a demon Sammy. He was playing on your emotions. You aren’t evil.”

Sam: “Well I may not be evil now, but I could be in the future.”

Dean: “Ok…well that could be, but I could also sprout hooves and a tail; but for right now the only evil I plan to face for a while is the trouble I plan to cause tonight. You up for it?” (Smirks and nods toward Sam).

Sam: (Smiles and crawls in the passenger side of the car). “Sure Dean. Let’s go.”

(Dean fires up the Metallicar and the boys drive out of Golls Woods to a Black Sabbath song.)

THE END

***

What did you think? Check out Claire’s story, along with the other five entries, then cast your vote for your favorite!

I have a very vivid imagination. As a result of this, in addition to the fact that my parents weren’t big fans of the genre, I never really watched scary movies as a kid, and even now as an adult I would be hard pressed to go and see any kind of slasher or horror movie. Despite the fact that I once scared myself silly after reading a book about how to hunt ghosts and carried my teddy bear around with me for two days after, my favorite television show now features two brothers hunting any number of terrifying creatures from the darkness.

When I was about eleven years old, my friend and I invented our own urban legend about the House Across the Street. In my neighborhood it was the house with the highest turn-over rate for new occupants. Even to this day people seem to move in and out of that house far more frequently than the rest of the block. One month there would be a young couple living there, after that a family with five children who had no idea what a fence was for and came and went through all yards equally. Two months later it was a motorcycle enthusiast who would invite his ten friends over every weekend, keeping my family up late with the roar of the hogs as they came and went down our street. Clearly, the only logical explanation for these phenomena was that the house was haunted.

The house was blue, two-storied, with a gabled roof on the front sheltering a small porch. There was a small front yard facing the street, but the key feature, to eleven-year old eyes, was the wooden slap-dash tree house in the backyard. There was really only one family that moved into the house with kids, and my siblings and I didn’t get along with them so we never got to see the tree house up close but only gazed at it from afar. It was made of plywood pieces put together inexpertly in a box shape with a rectangle left open here for a window and there for a door, and tree branches it rested in were not very far from the ground, yet somehow this tree house became far more than a child’s private retreat for my friend and I, though neither one of us had ever been in it.

“A kid died there.” My friend and I told each other. “She was playing in the tree house, swinging from a rope, and somehow it slipped and hanged her.” We said. True to urban legend form, there were just enough specifics to make it seem plausible. “After the girl died, her family moved away. From then on strange things began happening to whatever family lived in the house at the time. The girl’s ghost haunted not only the tree house where she had died, but also the house itself, slamming doors, flickering lights, unexplained noises and the like. All the kitchen appliances would turn on at once. One day a family with kids moved in. Two boys, one about eight, the other a little older. They weren’t too excited about moving, but when they saw the tree house and the backyard they were thrilled to have some place to play. A few weeks after they had gotten settled, the youngest boy fell out of the tree house and broke his arm. Naturally the parents were concerned, but kids have accidents like that all the time and no one thought anything of it. Until a few months later when the older boy fell out of the tree house and broke his neck. Another accident? Sure. But why were there rope marks around his neck if he died from the fall?”

There weren’t very many deaths chalked up to the ghost, my friend and I agreed. That would be too grisly. Instead there were just numerous accidents and a general sinister nature about the tree house. “Occasionally the ghost would appear, once to a group of kids who were staying the night in it, and she looked just a like a normal kid at first, but then turned into this horrible specter dressed in white. The kids were playing with some kind of ritual that involved candles, and one girl got caught on fire and was burned really bad.”

When it was a family without kids, we knew the house was still up to its old tricks because of the way the animals acted around it. There was a Doberman pinscher who lived in the backyard when his owner lived in the house. There were some other dogs too, but he’s the one who sticks out in my mind. For the sake of the story let’s say there were two other dogs, both lab mixes. “The Doberman, would always bark at the tree house, even though his owner couldn’t see any squirrels or small animals up there. The other dogs could sense it too, but they just avoided the tree holding the tree house and its occupant. The ghost didn’t do anything to the dogs, but after one long day and night where all three of the dogs had been barking and growling and generally freaking out constantly, the owner came out onto the back porch, grabbed his shot gun, and killed his dogs by shooting them point blank between the eyes. This guy loved his dogs, and later he said he couldn’t even remember why he did it, only that he was suddenly seized by a black rage.”

The house is still there, though I think by now the tree house has either rotted to pieces or been torn down. Even so, no one seems to live there very long. A young family with a new baby moved two years ago, but they moved across town last summer. In fact, a lot of the houses on my block have been put up for sale recently. The house right next door has had at least four families move in and out within a three year period. Normal economics of the housing market, maybe. But could it be something more?

Sam and Dean Winchester would be more than welcome in Tacoma, WA, since I haven’t even told you about the ghosts of Fort Nisqually, a local living history museum. (But they’re harmless and the staff is on good terms with them.) But I would really appreciate it if they made a stop by my neighborhood first, after all, just because a spirit is spawned from a fictional urban legend doesn’t mean it doesn’t have power. (Just look at Hell House!) The House Across the Street remains a prominent memory from my childhood, and I can still look out the window at the gray-shingled roof and the blue painted siding and think back on the delicious shivers that went down our spines as my friend and I told each other stories about the horrors of the tree house and its ghostly occupant.

Claire K-S
Tacoma, WA
3-26-08

***

What did you think? I live in the Chicago area.

First – we have Cuba Road in the small upscale town of Barrington, IL. Cuba is built up now with nice homes but when I was growing up, it was a great place to drive out to. It was a small secluded street with lots of trees. The rumor is that a bus full of school children were killed in a car accident and if you leave your car in nuetral the kids will come and push your car. They leave hand prints all over your car as proof. As many times as we went out there…I never did see the hand prints….but its a great story!!

There are also several other stories involving Cuba Road and the White Cemetary that is located there. Stories along the lines of people seeing different types of ghosts like women and Chicago gangsters.

The city of Chicago has a ton of haunted areas that Sam and Dean could also investigate. We had the Eastland boat disaster in 1915 where several hundred (it was 835 including 22 entire families) people from Western Electric were scheduled to take an employee ride down the Chicago River. As the people boarded, they all went to the same side to wave to the people on the dock and the Eastland flipped over killing most everyone. The water was not very deep, but they had no way to get out from under the boat.

The rumor is that the bodies were taken to several places around the city. One being what is now a dance club called Excalibur. There is a ghost of a little girl who employees have seen and women have reported their jewlery was removed while they were in the bathroom stall to be found on the sink counter when they go to wash their hands.

The other place – not a rumor, this is true – they were taken is what is now Oprah’s Harpo Studios. There are several stories of Oprah’s employee’s seeing ghosts but Oprah will not talk about it to leave them in peace.

People walking by the spot where the Eastland capsized have reported hearing screams.

We also had the Valentine’s Day masacre in Chicago. This is well documented so I won’t go into the details.

Thanks,
Renee

***

What did you think? As the legend goes, her husband died a very mysterious death in the early 1800s, and the Monroe villagers started wondering if perhaps Hannah was a witch.
According to Hannah, her husband awoke one morning to go for a walk, but while walking became disoriented and somehow walked right off a cliff.

Hannah began to make a habit of stopping at neighbors homes and scaring them into offering her free food and firewood, just to get her to leave. One farmer’s wife dared to deny Hannah the largest pie on her table–the farmer’s favorite–instead offering a much smaller one to the witch. Hannah left in a huff and allegedly cast an evil spell on the woman, so the farmer’s wife would never able to bake again. A similar fate befell a fisherman caught fishing on Hannah’s property. After she scolded him and threw him off her land, he was never able to fish again.
Those who truly believed in Hannah’s impressive abilities were duly rewarded with good spells. Those who mocked her in disbelief were punished with bad spells.
Hannah lived on top of Craig Hill in the Bug Hill-Cutler’s Farm section of Monroe, in a house said to be guarded by snakes of every type and size. She had a pet rooster, Old Boreas, whom some believed was actually her “familiar”, a spirit said to take the form of an animal and assist witches in their activities. When Old Boreas died, Hannah knew that her time was running out too.
She later told a trusted neighbor that she would soon die and wished to have her coffin carried by foot, not by wagon, to the cemetery. When she died the next day, a snowstorm hampered efforts to carry her casket through the knee-deep snow. The pallbearers decided to load her casket on a wagon, but it kept rolling off. The men finally decided to honor Hannah’s wish and brought her casket to the cemetery by foot. When they finished their grim task and headed back to town, they learned that Hannah’s house had gone up in flames shortly after they took her body away from it.
Today, some people think that Hannah’s spirit haunts the cemetery. A local urban legend claims that at least once a year, a driver passing by Gregory’s Four Corners Burial Ground swerves to avoid a woman in the middle of the road, and crashes into the same tombstone–that of Hannah Cranna (which the Town of Monroe replaces almost annually.) However, anyone visiting the cemetery will realize right away that this is nothing more than a local fabrication, for Hannah’s tombstone is up on a hill; it would be very difficult for a car to “accidentally” hit it. Also, there is no historical record in either Trumbull or Monroe of the stone ever having to be replaced.

They also say that if you jump over her tombstone 3 times that something bad happen to you. I broken leg or something else.

Another link: http://www.monroehistoricsociety.org/hannacranna.html

This is my legends of my hometown of Monroe and I hope supernatural comes to my town because nothing exciting happen around here, other than a bank robbery, which never happens a lot. Nobody knows that. She heard all the stuff that has been said about Sam, at the same time she knows how strong brotherhood relationship he have with Dean, then she realized that she can get to Sam by using Dean’s emotions. If she killed Dean then Sam is by him self. So she started to build a relationship with the boys, Dean loves the food she makes, and the fact that she treats him like her own son. Sam doesn’t like her that much… he thinks that she’s just an old witch…( Which is true)

In order to get to Sam she needs to get Dean out of her way, so she needs him to be by himself without his brother by his side, so it’s easier to kill him. She does some kind of magic that controls Sam’s mind and convince him that Dean is with him all the time, the fake Dean can’t talk, So Sam discovers that it’s not the real one. At the same time Dean is at the old lady’s house eating cookies (she invites him.. telling him that she have a secret to tell him) the food has something in them that would make Dean feel kind of dizzy, Dean was lucky because bobby knows that old witch and so bobby broke in, grabbed Dean and ran away shooting to keep her away from them.

When they get to Sam, Bobby tells them everything about her, Dean feels surprised, Sam looks at him like “I told you so” LOok. Bobby tells them a plan to kill her, Dean starts to throw up…they both look at him, Sam says that Dean can’t come with them because he’s not okay, they argue, Dean gets his way… they all go, Before they get close Bobby tells them that its dark in there an to stay close to each other so they won’t get lost, and the truth that this place is cursed.. with a curse that play with the mind of the weak people.. their emotions. They all get there, Because of the food that Dean he feels weak.. So its easier for him to get lost.. the curse starts to play with his mind and shows him his mom…She tells him to get closer and to help her… he’s like “No,That’s not real”, But as soon as he takes one step closer to her he gets hit on his head. Sam and Bobby realize that Dean’s lost so they try to get a hold of him, They Call and Call, they both could hear the ring tone … so they follow the sound of it, Sam sees Dean’s phone on the ground, So they take the same way and they get to the house, They break in when she’s about to kill Dean…Bobby shoots her over and over and over again but it doesn’t even hurt her … it pushes her away but it doesn’t hurt her …She’s not dead.

Sam sees a necklace that she ware… with out thinking Sam jumps on her and he takes it off, he screams at Bobby “Now, do it Now !”

Bobby shoots her like three or four times and this bright …bright lights comes out of her, suddenly everything is white, then it’s all over.

Dean is saying “Son Of a Bitch !”, they get out, when they get to the car the whole place behind them explode with Darkness and Fire.

***

What did you think?
