Paul Maguire, Executive Vice President of Network Communications at The CW, expressed the network’s support for Supernatural to our Sci-Fi writer friend at About.com, Mark Wilson. [He'll say he's never heard of me, but, just humor him.]
Mr. Wilson wrote the network, asking them to make a statement about the move to remove Supernatural from the line-up to help gain exposure for sister show Reaper.
Paul Maguire responded thusly:

With the writers’ strike still in full swing, Supernatural is due to hit its Subnatural end of completed episodes on February 21, 2008. While the show is not canceled, it goes on hiatus, while The CW plays around for the benefit of other shows’ ratings.
Here is what they have completed, and when the episodes will air in the next four weeks:

Episode 3.09 – Malleus Maleficarum (AKA “Witch Hunt”) 1/31 [Spoiler]
Episode 3.10 – Dream A Little Dream Of Me 2/7
Episode 3.11 – Jus In Bello 2/14
Episode 3.12 – Mystery Spot 2/21

Tomorrow night, The CW an “encore presentation” of Episode Red Sky at Morning.
Next week, on Thursday January 31, Supernatural airs its first new episode of the year, 3.09, alternatively titled Witch Hunt on several sites and Malleus Maleficarum in a couple places on The CW website.

Supernatural on The CW, Thursdays, 9PM ET. Image: The CW

Supernatural, currently airing Thursdays at 9PM ET, will go on a limited hiatus, beginning February 28. In it’s place, Reaper, another of The CW’s under-appreciated shows, takes over Supernatural’s timeslot, in hopes of generating more interest by following Smallville.
Will this be good for either of these, or both, shows? Time will tell. This three card monte with the schedule is usually bad, but The CW hopes to capitalize –for Reaper’s benefit- on the loss of fresh competition. By then, both Lost and Grey’s Anatomy will be out of fresh scripts. …read more

Lost takes on Supernatural, Thursdays at 9PM ET.

Beginning January 31, Lost takes over the 9PM ET slot on ABC. The highly rated show could be a big challenge for Supernatural. Lost may share more potential fan demographic with Supernatural than Grey’s Anatomy did.
This is a good time for Supernatural fans to join Team Winchester, and help get the word out about your beloved show.
