Writers’ Strike Officially Over!

Writers’ Strike Officially Over!

Last night, at 6PM PST, 92.5% of the 3,775 writers voting, voted ‘YES’ to ending the 100 day old strike. We all knew this was coming. The CW had just issued its plans for the rest of 2008, and the industry seemed to have already breathed a giant corporate sigh of relief. The governing board for the Writers’ Guild of America had unanimously approved the agreement on Sunday.
While everyone is going back to work, today, there is still one last piece to fall into place. The union must still ratify the contract. This should happen any day now. Currently, though, …read more

Michael Eisner. AP

Saturday, 9 February, The contract will go before the WGA general assembly for final acceptance. When asked about the possibility that the assembly won’t accept the deal Eisner stated that acceptance was “inevitable.”

Writers, Studios Overcome Thorny Issues; Tentative Agreement May Come This Week

Writers, Studios Overcome Thorny Issues; Tentative Agreement May Come This Week

According to leaks to the Associated Press by two anonymous insiders, the Writers’ Guild of America (WGA) and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, representing the studios, made significant progress, in talks Friday.
Until now, the sticking points included insistence by the studios to limit writers’ residuals for online content to a flat $1,200 fee. The WGA wants a percentage of the distributor’s revenue.
Initial reports of agreements on important issues is certainly good news. I hope that we hear some credible verification from the parties involved, in the next few days.

The Guardian (U.K.) Commentary Looks at Writers’ Strike vs. Prison Officers Strike (2007)

The Guardian (U.K.) Commentary Looks at Writers’ Strike vs. Prison Officers Strike (2007)

With Parliament looking at banning –again- strikes by personnel essential to the public, and incarcerated good, Zoe Williams compares –a little- and contrasts –a lot- last Summers’ U.K. Prison Officers’ strike to the current Writers’ Strike.
She makes some interesting points, definitely worth discussing, as can be seen by those who commented about the piece.

How does a Hollywood Writers’ Strike stand up against a Prison Officers’ Strike?
Do the writers lack the sympathy factor of under-paid public servants?
Do the writers lose out a bit, since their $500 million impact on the entertainment industry pales in contrast to a prison full of …read more

Supernatural Producer Ben Edlund at Joss Whedon’s “Mutant Enemy Picket Day”

Joss Whedon. Believe it or not, there may be Americans who don’t have any idea who this man is. When the man calls for support for any cause, however, he has many friends, who are ready, and more than willing to help.
Supernatural, and erstwhile Angel and Firefly, producer/writer, Ben Edlund, was one of Joss’ friends who came to stand up for the WGA writers’ strike, recently. Mr. Edlund and many others spoke to iF Magazine’s T.K. Dehn, that day, about the strike, and about the important issues at stake for television, movies, and all new media.
From the article, Joss Whedon’s …read more

Supernatural: Episodes Run Out January 17

Supernatural Episode 3.11 – Jus In Bello

If the networks and studios don’t work something out with the WGA –perhaps, even if they do- Thursday, January 17 could be the last episode for Supernatural Season Three.
Let’s hope for some reason, soon. There’s not a lot of time to complete the writing, and the production of even a couple more episodes of any of our favorite hour-long evening scripted television shows. If things don’t turn around soon, all the good ideas are going into Supernatural Season Four.
So, call your network exec friends, and tell them to follow David Letterman’s lead.
Of course, as …read more

Hope At Last? Writers Strike Ending at Smaller Production Companies

Hooray for David Letterman! Though many scripted TV dramas and sitcoms may end the season in chaos, perpetual reruns, or replacement by reality tv, the deal struck between David Letterman’s Worldwide Pants and the WGA is a ray of hope in this strike-sick season. The agreement will hopefully lead to more smaller production companies making their own independent agreements with their writers. Key to this agreement with Worldwide Pants, of course, is the section detailing residual payments for content made available on advertising and subscription …read more
